There are times in life when making our ‘happy happen’ can feel complex and out of reach. However, the truth is that most of the time it’s actually quite simple. As simple as taking a couple of minutes for ourselves to tune into what we feel would make us happy right now and then seeing what we need to do to get there.

There’s an easy process you can use in case you want to take that space for yourself right now. It all starts with:

Bringing clarity into what it is that you desire.

How do you do that? Find a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed for a couple of minutes. Then simply close your eyes and turn your attention within. Take some deep breaths and sense what it’s like to be in your body right now. Slowly concentrate your attention on your heart, visualising bright light radiating from it. Then ask your heart: “What is it that I most want right now?” and remain open to receive its answer. Don’t rush it, let it come to you whenever it feels like.

When it arrives, visualise the details of it – where are you, what’s going on in your life, who’s with you etc. Bring that image into your heart space and allow it to merge with the light. Let the light spread through your entire body and allow it to spread out to the world around you, sending out the message of your desire. Then bring your attention back within your own body and open your eyes.

What you have now is a clear desire. You know what you want.

Most of your work is done! Now your attention will naturally begin looking for ways to make that desire happen. You will start seeing opportunities, ideas, action steps, people, situations that support you in fulfilling it. There is one more step, however, that can make a huge difference to your process. That step is:

Detaching your desire from your happiness.

Why is this important? A very common trap we humans tend to fall into is attaching our happiness to things that ‘need to happen’ for us to ‘finally be happy’. It’s a way of postponing our happiness for the future and suffering our way towards it only to find that once we get where we want, there’s no happiness there. Our happiness has now moved to another future outcome! The desires can change, but the game stays the same. It’s the game of telling our brain ‘It’s not time yet for you to be happy’ to which the brain responds with ‘Sure, I’ll wait’. We can play that game for a very long time until we realise we can play other games too.

So how do we detach our happiness from our desires for the future? It’s as simple as remembering that you can create happiness for yourself right now, in this present moment. It can be a matter of closing your eyes and indulging in some good feelings you detect in your body, just as you would with a plate of fresh forest fruits! Or remembering a past experience when you felt really nice. Or maybe looking around and seeing things that are pleasing to your eyes – the weather outside, the nice colour or texture of an object, the face of a loved one etc.

As you create happiness for yourself right now, you are no longer attaching it to your desire coming to fruition. You already are happy! And your energy is open and flowing and allowing more things that make you happy to flow into your experience. Including that desire – that desire is such an awesome bonus and it’s already coming your way. All you need to do is stay open to receive it. And you do it by creating a habit to focus on what works, what makes you happy, what’s so freakin’ goooooood about your life right now.

So there you go. Two simple steps to making your happy happen. Clarify what your heart desires and then remember you don’t need to wait for it, that you have a choice to be happy right now, which actually brings you closer to it.
