Redefining abundance

What do you see in your mind’s eye when you hear the word ‘abundance’? If you, like me, have grown up in a Western culture, it’s very possible that the first images that come up for you are associated with financial prosperity. Rich people, pretty houses, fancy cars, nice clothes, instagram holidays… Even those who have received or created a different perspective, can acknowledge the thickness of the link that ties up the concepts of ‘money’ and ‘abundance’ in our collective psyche. It makes sense – after all, for a long time we’ve used money to get the things we need, right? Right. However,

Just because money can get us ‘stuff’ doesn’t mean it brings abundance or allows us to feel it.

The reason for that is that money IS NOT abundance. Our consciousness won’t let us feel at ease when it comes to neither until we break that false link. When we are not at ease with those, they won’t come easily to us. This is why, it’s important to match our practical efforts at generating money and abundance with inner work on the level of our consciousness and perceptions. So where do we begin? Imagine you are holding an entangled thread that you want to undo. It helps to start by looking at the ends of the thread, right?

Redefining money

First, look into your concept of ‘money’. What’s that concept like? What’s your definition of money? Take a minute to think and answer this. If you are like me, your first answer might try to replicate the definition you read in a dictionary or economics class. Or it might be something completely different. Whatever it is, unless you consciously thought about this before, you are probably looking at your understanding of what the consensus reality you’ve been immersed in understands to be ‘money’.

Isn’t money something that exists primarily in our consensus reality? Yes and no. Yes because money definitely IS something that exists in our pockets and even more importantly – in the collective consciousness that makes us all believe it’s worth something. And no because it is also something that just as importantly exists in our personal realities.

Just because there is a shared definition of money doesn’t mean that we can’t have our own. And if we are really into it, even create a new one for everyone else to share. So what should that personal definition be like? That’s entirely up to you. If you have the freedom to come up with anything, why not make it something that makes you feel good – joyful, appreciative, easy – whenever you think of money? As you feel more ease, this ease will also reflect in your openness to receive and generate cash flow. You can find out more about how to do it here.

Redefining abundance

Time to look at the other end of the thread. What is abundance to you? And more importantly – if you acknowledge your power to create your own personal definition, what would that be like? It doesn’t need to be your final say on this topic. Get going and let it unfold. For example, my personal definition of abundance has been shifting ever since I first encountered this question in a session with financial coach Laura Fredrickson. She helped me see it as a stream of wellbeing I could either flow with or against. As a result, I created two mantras to help me tune myself energetically to that new perspective:

“The Universe is on my side and has created me so I can be well and flourish.”
“As I flow downstream and enjoy the love, joy, freedom and connection I am feeling, I am an expression of unconditional love towards myself and the Universe. Thus, I already am successful and my life is a celebration. As a consequence of this, I also enjoy the abundance of opportunities, money, relationships and health that flow my way with ease.”

More recently, I’ve come to see abundance as the miracle of the lifeforce that we all carry within and all the incredible support that lifeforce keeps receiving to keep going, in the form of air, food, water, shelter, friendships, love, beauty, inspirations, opportunities and yes – last but not least, also money. I believe it is this perception that is ultimately responsible for my ability to follow my heart to yet another magical place and see opportunities and money rise to meet me in making it possible.

Abundance as an experience

Abundance is not just a concept, it is an experience. As we allow ourselves to actually FEEL the impact of our changing mental perspectives on our bodies, we open doors to ever deeper layers of perception and understanding. It is what I experienced a couple of days back where sat down in the middle of a dance I was attending and cried. I cried because I felt overwhelmed with the vastness of the abundance that was moving through me and towards me as I arrived in the beautiful Sacred Valley in Peru. It felt like anything I could do to give back would be just a small dot in the hugeness and the beauty of what I felt I was receiving.

I am not a religious person, but in that moment I preyed that I am ALLOWED to give back – to contribute to the abundance of other beings to the best of my gifts and abilities. It was the moment I truly started thinking not just about being well, not just about wishing others to be well, but about investing my resources in a way that promotes the wellbeing of all beings on this planet. That thinking did not come from my head, it came from my body and from my heart and from my tears. And that makes a world of difference.

Disentangling money and abundance

Redefining these concepts is not something you do once and you’re done. It’s a process that evolves and deepens as you bring consciousness to it. Having read this article and thought about those questions is a great start. Making some mantras out of your new definitions of money and abundance can help you go further. Any activity that allows you to intentionally explore your perceptions, emotions and bodily experiences around these concepts with openness and curiosity is amazing. It can be even as simple as taking a commitment to reshape your perception of abundance and opening yourself up to the inspirations and opportunities that will come to meet that.

Why it matters?

As you take the decision to open up your own understanding of abundance, you are doing a service not just to yourself, but also to others who get to witness your being and doing from an open space of appreciation and possibility. As more of us bring our consciousness to this, we come in tune with our beautiful planet, its gifts and its human and non-human children, celebrating and promoting their wellbeing as well. It’s an incredible journey and one of the most important opportunities of living in our incredible times of rising human awareness. I wish from the bottom of my heart that we share it and that we meet to celebrate it together along the way.
